Now that the 2018 season is over, we set our sights on the 2019 campaign and free agency. We looked at the Riders free agent MUST re-sign list, but the most important position in football is the quarterback spot and there are PLENTY of intriguing names ready to hit the open market this offseason.
With that in mind, your starting quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders will be… Jonathan Jennings!! ! Chris Jones will miss out on Mike Reilly and will have to settle for what’s left. In this case, it’s Jennings. Maybe a chance of scenery will catapult him back into the conversation of being one of the CFL’s better Quarterbacks.
What I would like to see is complete chaos… Mike Reilly in Ottawa, Bo Levi Mitchell in Saskatchewan, Trevor Harris in BC and Zach Collaros in Calgary… but that would just be too much fun and we all know that isn’t allowed. So, in no particular order, let’s look at where the other big names will end up… Let the wild speculation begin!!
Travis Lulay – Lulay has always been able to rally the Lions around him and they play better with him at the helm, but they no longer want him back. With the question marks that James Franklin and Macleod Bethel-Thompson provide in Toronto, Lulay is brought in to the 6ix to stabilize the position.
Bo Levi Mitchell – Unless Bo signs in the NFL (and he won’t take a practice roster spot anywhere), Bo will be a Stampeder.
Mike Reilly – All this talk of Reilly going back to BC or following Chris Jones to Saskatchewan is just that… talk. He isn’t going anywhere. Reilly will continue to put up 5,000 yard seasons in Edmonton.
Kevin Glenn – What’s old is new again in Saskatchewan. What the hell, why not? Glenn comes back for one more season and is the backup to Jennings in Riderville… unless Halifax gets a team in 2020. Then he goes there for one day deal.
Zach Collaros – After a rather strange, injury-filled year in Saskatchewan, Collaros is going to be relegated to backup… in Ottawa. No teams are going to take a chance on Collaros being their starter any more. His health is too much of a risk and I wouldn’t be surprised if he put that health first and retired.
Brandon Bridge – A disappointing season in Saskatchewan will result in no contract offer being made by the Riders. After they lose Jennings to Saskatchewan, the BC Lions will snap up Brandon Bridge to be their backup
Ricky Ray – Sadly, Ricky Ray’s Hall of Fame career will come to an end due to an injury. We all had hoped that he would have gone out on top after the 2017 season and a Grey Cup win, but he decided to give it one more go. See you in the HOF, Ricky.
Trevor Harris – There is no chance Ottawa lets Harris get away. And Harris would be silly to go elsewhere, he pretty much has a bye to the Grey Cup in the East on the division’s best team. Harris is a REDBLACK for a while.
DARK HORSE SELECTION: Darian Durant – Should Kevin Glenn retire or go elsewhere, Chris Jones panics for a backup with any kind of meaningful experience and Doubles comes back to Riderville.
