Alex’s CFL Tuesday Takes

It’s hard to believe, but we are coming up on the halfway point of the 2023 CFL season. Here are a few of my takeaways from week 9 in the CFL:

Dinwiddie Got it Right! – For once, we saw a coach play the long game with an injured QB as Ryan Dinwiddie elected to sit Chad Kelly for the 2nd half of their loss to Calgary. The player will always tell the coach that they are fine and they can play through an injury. Dinwiddie didn’t make the mistake of listening to the player and put his foot down and I love it. Coach is in charge, it’s HIS team and they’ll be better off down the road for it.

Blue & Gold and Back to the Old – Welp, the Bombers are the best team in the league again. Don’t tell me that was just another game last week for Winnipeg as they crushed the Lions… they put the CFL on notice that they are still the Bombers and as long as they have Zach Collaros, they are the best team in the league. The play of their O-Line was the reason why I called them beatable in the first half of the season, but it was the play of their O-Line against BC that I’ll say is the reason they are back to being at the top of the CFL mountain.

FINE-ally Mason Gets a Win – The weight and pressure coming off of the back and shoulders of Riders QB Mason Fine must be a relief. He’s shown some great progress over the last few weeks and I think he has the weapons around him to keep games competitive and keep the Riders firmly in the West playoff hunt. You can tell that Kelly Jeffrey is trusting him more and is opening up the playbook, which has given us a chance to really see what Fine has. At least Rider fans (myself included) won’t be questioning how long his leash should be going forward… at least for another week.
