Alex’s CFL Tuesday Takes – April 17, 2018

Last week I talked about the Humboldt Broncos and as much as I would like to move on, that simply isn’t possible. Instead we must move forward and attempt to get things back to “normal”, whatever that is. While I won’t mention it much anymore, I will say that the outpouring of love and generosity shown by Saskatchewan, the rest of Canada and many other places across the world is incredible. In a way it’s sad that it takes a tragedy like this to see the good in people, but as we all continue our grieving process, we must look at the good. We may never fully move on, but we can start to move through this tough time.
On to football, we have mini-camps starting! Montreal opened theirs the other day and it’s Josh Freeman‘s first action with the Alouettes. Sorry Als fans, this is going to backfire horribly. You’re better off signing Drew Tate and starting him over anything else you have.
Roy Finch…. oh Roy Finch. No problems with you smoking weed, I really don’t care. Just keep in mind where you are when doing it. And if you get busted, regardless of how dumb the charge is, maaaaayyyyybe don’t swing at a cop. Were 8 or so cops taking him down and beating the crap out of him excessive? Yeah, probably. But still, if you take a swipe at a cop, they will be excessive.
It’s disappointing as Finch was set to take on a bigger role this season for the Calgary Stampeders, but as a Rider fan, good. One less impact player to worry about for now (and it didn’t happen to a Rider, so seeing the Stamps fans sulk about this is refreshing).
Hey rest of the CFL… DO SOMETHING. Someone make a trade or cut someone with name recognition. This past month or so has been BORING.
Luckily, we have the CFL GM Conference Calls happening soon here. Nothing ever really comes of these, but if it gives me a reason to listen to Chris Jones talk for 15-20 mins, sign me up! What I wouldn’t give to have 15 minutes with him to just sit and let him talk football.
We are now less than 2 months away from the season opener! Even though I am usually disappointed when I open my season tickets (let’s be honest, the Riders do very little for their season ticket holders… a shoelace? Thanks guys…), I can’t wait to get that package in the mail. It’s just that one step closer to games. I truly miss football and I can only take so many mock drafts.
The… fall, I’ll call it… of Kent Austin has been kind of crazy. Once regarded as a great coordinator, then the greatest Head Coach in the history of ever back in 2007, the last few years he has been continuously pushed away by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, even after taking them to back to back Grey Cups and then then an Eastern Division final. Now he’s basically on the way out the door and we have to wonder if we ever see him in the CFL again after this season. It’s not looking likely, which is a bit of a shame.
Can the CFL finally just announce the 2019 Grey Cup to Calgary already? And while we’re at it, can we just announced the Halifax/Maritime franchise already? Both are going to happen, let’s get going!
