Alex’s CFL Tuesday Takes – April 3, 2018

We are one month away from the CFL Draft and I am (not so) patiently awaiting more trades to happen from teams looking to dump salary and pick up more draft picks. There just simply isn’t enough CFL news making headlines right now. Many expect the Riders to make a few deals as they currently only have 5 picks in the 2018 draft, the least in the league.

Without a pick in the 3rd or 4th round, Saskatchewan may make a trade to get back into one of those rounds. The most popular names thrown around are Peter Dyakowski, Chad Owens and Bakari Grant. But none of those will be out… at least not before the draft.

Chris Jones is better off keeping what he has now and using those first 2 picks for getting the best players available (a Receiver and a Defensive Lineman) and making moves before Training Camp and getting more picks for 2019.

Hamilton has already won this draft before it started. They have 9 picks (tied for the most in the league), with 5 of those in the first 20. You need a QB and good Canadian talent to win in the CFL. This is a huge step for Hamilton to make a run in the next few years. Oh how I long for the Riders to be set with draft picks. One day… one day.

Defensive End John Chick announced his retirement on Good Friday. Chick was easily the best Riders DE since Bobby Jurasin and I would argue what he did was even more impressive, considering he played with Type 1 Diabetes and an insulin pump during his career. I’ve never seen a guy with the motor and the will like John Chick had. He just. Never. Stopped! All the best in your post football life John, thanks for everything you did for the CFL and the Saskatchewan Roughriders franchise. See you in the Plaza of Honour!

Everyone knows that Bo Levi Mitchell’s shoulder was shot at the end of the 2017 season and he just wasn’t himself. We’ve heard NOTHING from him this offseason and he deleted his Twitter account as well. I hope I’m wrong, but I can’t help but feeling like this may be an Andrew Luck type situation. Just how bad is his arm?

I’ll throw a random CFL prediction out here… Eskimos receiver Derel Walker will lead the league in receiving in 2018.

Is it May yet?
