Alex’s CFL Tuesday Takes – September 18, 2018

A New Era Dawns

With New Era taking over the jersey and apparel contract for the CFL in 2019, I’m glad there won’t be any changes to the jerseys… at least for one more year. We are the guinea pigs for New Era and I’d like to see what they do with shirts and other clothing first before we see changes to jerseys. Also a fan of this move because the Adidas stock will have to be cleared out and I can’t wait to save a bunch of money on jerseys… Hopefully a name like New Era instead of Adidas will lower costs of products, but I’m not holding my breath.

Johnny Laughter

Apparently complaining about losing your starting job and laughing at your teammate when he has a poor game means you get your starting spot back… This is it, Manziel… this is your chance. If you can’t perform now, you never will. We’ll see who’s laughing this week when you throw a few interceptions.

Hair Pulling

This old rule (or non-rule) debate has come back. Should hair pulling in the CFL be a penalty? NO! The hair is part of the body and should be treated as such. It is not league mandated equipment, it’s a personal choice. If a player wants to have dreads or long hair and NOT tuck it into their jersey or helmet, that’s their own personal decision. You know the risks of having your hair out when you do it.

Now, I’m not condoning strictly pulling hair just because you can, but if you are grabbing for the shoulders or jersey and get a handful of hair, well that’s their problem, not yours. I’ve seen comments saying the league should force players to cut their hair… WHAT IS THIS, THE ARMY?? Come on! It’s pro sports, not a 1960s office setting where everyone must look the same.

Offensive Offense

The Riders offense has 15 touchdowns this year and their defense/special teams has 12 (It should be 14-13 if Matt Elam didn’t give up on his INT a few weeks ago and get knocked out of bounds at the 1 yard line). As great and opportunistic this D/ST has been, this is an absolute joke.

We’ve been saying that as soon as this offense gets rolling, watch out, but we are now two-thirds done the season. This offense isn’t getting any better. It’s better with Collaros at the helm and the play calling is better, but let’s face it, this is what we are stuck with in Riderville. They have the talent there, but for whatever reason, the execution isn’t there and it doesn’t bode well for the team when they will likely have to face Mike Reilly and Bo Levi Mitchell in the playoffs to get to the Grey Cup.
