The day we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. Today marks the official kick off to CFL Free Agency! I say official, because now teams can “officially” speak to players from other teams… we all know that ALL teams tamper. Why the CFL just doesn’t open a proper window like all the other leagues do is beyond me, but that’s another discussion.
Mike Reilly is going to BC, Toronto is preparing a huge offer to Bo Levi Mitchell, Trevor Harris might leave Ottawa… what are the Riders and Esks going to do now? Does James Franklin get traded? How about Ricky Ray? There are SO many questions we should get answers to in the next few days… and these are just the Quarterbacks!
How are the teams that sign the huge QB contracts going to build the rest of their team? If Reilly/Mitchell each get over $700,000 AND the salary cap doesn’t budge much, how will that hinder the rest of their team? THIS is what has me most intrigued. Edmonton missed the playoffs WITH the best and highest paid QB last year. If BC and Calgary both have QBs making $150,000 MORE than than, what high profile stars will have to be cut to make that work?
How about the Saskatchewan Roughriders? Is Zach Collaros coming back if the Riders strike out on the big time QBs? Can they attract a big time receiver or two? Will Willie Jefferson be returning? GM Jeremy O’Day is going into his first free agency period as a GM and I’m intrigued by what he and Coach Craig Dickenson can put together.
The dominos are about to start falling. Let the games begin! I can’t wait for the overreactions!
