For the first time in a long time, I’m way more excited for the Grey Cup Halftime show than I am for the Super Bowl Halftime Show and the CFL deserves some major props! Green Day is the PERFECT choice for the league’s championship game!
Last week, the NFL announced Usher as the Super Bowl Halftime Show and I’m looking forward to it. I don’t know a ton of his catalogue, but I know the hits, which is what he’ll perform. It’s going to be a great show. I know the traditional football fans won’t like it, but that’s okay, the NFL isn’t marketing towards you anyways. You’ll watch the game regardless.
But the CFL is a different market. Not everyone tunes into the halftime show at Grey Cup like they do for the Super Bowl. The CFL has to not only stay current with trying to get an act that is big now to try and grow their non-traditional football audience, but they also need to get a name big enough that the hardcores like as well. With names recently like Tyler Hubbard, Josh Ross & Jordan Davis last year, Alessia Cara in 2018, even Arkells in 2021 (which I LOVED by the way), the older fans that are still a major base in the CFL have showed their displeasure and it gives them another reason to tune out.
But I have not seen ONE bad comment about Green Day. Not a single one. Fans my age who grew up in the 90s listening to Dookie on repeat, younger fans that grew up with American Idiot and even the older fans that want a rock show every year that likely had their kids or grandkids (me) blasting Nimrod have heard of Green Day and know some of their songs. Green Day hits every single demographic that the CFL is trying to market towards and it’s great to see!
Sometimes, I’m quite critical of the league and their marketing because I know they can do better. But when they deserve props for doing something great, I’ll be the first one to give them. Getting not only Carrie Underwood (not my cup of tea, but that’s a HUGE W for the league) for the Friday night of the Grey Cup Festival, but Green Day after for the Grey Cup Halftime Show? *chef’s kiss* GREAT job, CFL! Hopefully this is just the beginning of a major marketing change for the league and some more dollars come rolling in for the league I love the most!
