Well Rider fans, we’re here! After an offseason of change and newly found hope, your Saskatchewan Roughriders are set to kick off the season in Edmonton against the Elks at 2pm (note the time change from the original 5pm time slot so Edmontonians can watch both the Elks and Oilers lose today).

We’ve talked a big game for Head Coach Corey Mace since being hired and today we finally get to see it put into action with his team. It’s going to be interesting to see him handle game situations that he hasn’t had to before. That was an issue with Craig Dickenson over the last couple of years, so hopefully we see something different this year.

As for the team on the field, we are already testing the depth of the defensive backfield. OUT for the game are DB’s Amari Henderson and Rodney Clemons, both projected starters for this team. Also not dressed is newly signed DB Marcus Sayles who was an All-Star in 2022 with the BC Lions. He was among final cuts in BC last weekend and was quickly added to the Riders by General Manager Jeremy O’Day. The Riders are going with DB DaMarcus Fields as halfback with Henderson out.

The rest of the starters look like what we’ve mostly expected throughout much of Training Camp, with one exception. They are going with a full American linebacking group with C.J. Avery starting over Canadian Adam Auclair. The one thing I’m curious to watch is how they use Clint Ratkovich behind A.J. Ouellette in the running game.

For Edmonton, OUT is former Rider, receiver Kyran Moore as new QB1 McLeod Bethel-Thompson will be missing one of his new targets in the pass game. Also OUT is another former Rider, defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy. And their very young defensive line is going to be tested, as their projected 4 starters have a combined 5 QB Sacks in their careers.

Don’t miss out on Episode 272 of The Piffles Podcast where we made predictions and picks for the season and looked ahead to this game.
