Is Riders New QB ‘The Next One’?

On Friday afternoon, the Saskatchewan Roughriders signed former Notre Dame Fighting Irish QB Jack Coan to a contract. Like we ask when any new QB is signed, we ask: is Coan going to be the next franchise QB in Riderville? He had success at a couple of major Div-I NCAA universities (was at Wisconsin before transferring over to Notre Dame), so that’s enough to have me a bit more intrigued about this signing.

Now, we LOOOOOOVE our backup QBs here in Rider Nation, yet currently, there isn’t much love in the fanbase for current #2 QB Mason Fine. I think the fans are still wishing the team was able to keep Jake Dolegala instead of Fine, but it’s too late for that now. So we must look to the future. I, like many Rider fans, am going to be interested to see Coan in Training Camp. I don’t think he will be competing for the #2 job this season, just a spot on the Practice Roster. I think Fine’s spot on the roster is pretty etched in stone, but that doesn’t mean that things can’t change later on in the season or for 2025.

Of course, Trevor Harris is the guy this year. There’s no debate on that. Heck, with his training and how he takes care of his body, he might be the QB here for a few years. Coan is quite similar to Harris in the sense that he isn’t the most mobile QB, but has one talented arm. If that’s what the offense under new Offensive Coordinator Marc Mueller builds around, maybe the chances of Coan sticking around a while go up. That might be the upper hand Coan has over any other backup QB on the roster.

Coan’s numbers in the XFL last year with the San Antonio Brahmas weren’t exactly eye-popping, but he was the Offensive Player of the Week in Week 2 with a 3 TD, 0 INT game, so it seems there is some potential there. If the new regime in Saskatchewan can be a bit patient, maybe Coan can be a guy they can invest some time in. I know that we aren’t exactly the most patient fan base in the world, but at this point we kind of have to be. At least for the 2024 season.

So is Jack Coan the next QB of the future in Riderville? Who knows. But you can’t find out if you don’t try. Hopefully he’s given a fair shot in Training Camp to get some valuable reps and we see him get meaningful time in one or both of the preseason games to get a proper evaluation on him. The Riders NEED to find their QB of the future fairly quickly… maybe Coan can be that guy. If not, at least the team is trying and they can bring in more QBs throughout the season.
