Piffles Top 5 – New Players Alex Is Looking Forward to Seeing in Training Camp

I know we are still a month away from Rookie Camp and Training Camp, but I’m getting really excited for this CFL season and to see how the new look Saskatchewan Roughriders are going to take shape.

Yes, I’m very much looking forward to seeing guys like A.J. Ouellette and Jalon Edwards-Cooper with the Riders, but for today, I’m going to give my Top 5 NEW CFL players that I’m looking forward to seeing in green and white this May.

1. QB – Jack Coan

One of the Riders most recent signings, Coan will be the youngest QB coming to camp. The Riders BADLY need to find their QB of the future and while we don’t know if that will be Coan, you have to bring in as many QBs as you can, especially with an aging vet at the helm. I look forward to seeing what he has to offer in Training Camp and see if he’s worth investing in and keeping around on the Practice Roster.

2. OL – Jonathan Hubbard

The Riders NEED to find their left tackle of the future and I’m hoping that can be Hubbard. The last few years haven’t been kind to the Riders and their O-Line and the QB’s blindside. Hubbard is a true Left Tackle and should have a great chance to lock down this open starting spot.

3. WR – KeeSean Johnson

The Riders have a couple of receiver positions that aren’t spoken for yet and they need to find their own Dalton Schoen to take the league by storm. He’s not THAT Keyshawn Johnson, but how great would it be to have him make the same kind of plays that the other Keyshawn did (while also wearing green and white with the Jets)?

4. DB – Holton Hill

The Riders need one more Defensive Back to round out their (projected) starting unit and Hill is the one that intrigues me. We talked about him on The Piffles Podcast and how his scouting report reminds us of Nic Marshall. In his prime, Marshall was the best cornerback in the CFL and if Hill can come in and take things seriously (that was one of the knocks against him coming out of college), he just might grab that vacant corner spot in the secondary and be our next standout corner. And you don’t spend 4 years in the NFL and start a handful of games without having talent. Can’t wait to see what Hill brings to the green and white.

5. DL – Roman Lee Harrison/Elijah Ponder//Brayden Thomas/R.J. McIntosh

Okay, this is a bit of a cop out, but I’m intrigued to see which of the new recruits for Defensive End wins a job in camp. The Riders are likely going to have a heavy rotation on the D-Line again this year and they’ll need some new blood in there to wreak havoc with Micah Johnson, Anthony Lanier II & Malik Carney. The green and white have never really had a hard time finding good pass rushers, so I’m excited to see which of the new recruits is going to be the next star.
