Quick Slants looks at some of the weekly stories in the CFL and beyond.
WTF Was That…
I’m not going to go deep into the game against Ottawa here, I am just going to let it stew and let it all vent out when we record episode 81.
I have already asked Alex to cue up the rant bumper at the beginning of the show and we can just go off. Because honestly its hard to find a silver lining in that game minus Jordan Williams-Lambert.
I get that short week suck, but that was U-G-L-Y and they ain’t got no alibi. It was UGLY!
Everyone deals with a crap schedule, but they are professionals the team just wasn’t ready to play on a short turnaround.
We will have more on this on this week’s pod.
Dontcha dare miss it!
Charleston for Nothing and the Sacks for Free
The Hamilton Tiger-cats finally cut Vernon Adams Jr this week after much speculation on his future with the team. With the signing of Johnny Manziel, the Ticats didn’t really need to keep Adams on the team and they were trying to move him.
There were trade offers out there but they were quickly scuttled when June Jones in a media scrum blurted out which teams had offers on the table. After a failed attempt at trying Adams out at receiver, they decided to just move on, which made me revisit the series of trades that landed him in Hamilton and Charleston Hughes in Saskatchewan.
Hamilton traded their 4th round pick (28th Overall) and a 2019 4th round pick for Hughes and Calgary’s 4th round pick (34th Overall). They then swapped Hughes immediately to Saskatchewan for Adams.
With Adams cut, that leaves the Riders with one of the best DL in the league. Stampeders drafted David Brown at 28th and sent him back to university after training camp hoping more seasoning in USports will bring him further along.
Meanwhile, the Ticats packaged that 4th round pick and a few others with Ryan Bomben to get the first overall pick from Montreal. They then used that pick to select Mark Chapman, who is still holding out and doesn’t seem even remotely close to signing.
I hope Ticats GM Eric Tillman was playing the long game on these trades if not, Riders clearly won this set of deals.
I Lied…
One more thing about the game the Riders need another DB on the roster, and I mean yesterday.
Yes, Duron Carter is one hell of an athlete.
Yes, Duron Carter has 2 starts at DB and 2 Pick-6s.
And yes, he is serviceable back there in a pinch.
IN A PINCH!!!
But as proven by tonight you can’t have him out there for the full game. The Redblacks planned for him as a DB and in some plays out right exposed him. And other times, he took penalties that extended drives when the defence needs to get off the field.
The team is better with Duron as a WR blowing up defences and taking a few snaps at DB than having him take no snaps at all at WR.
The first rule of any business is put your people in positions to excel.
Duron excels as a trash-talking receiver, let’s keep it that way.
Record night can’t come soon enough…
