Release of Moncrief Stings, But Right Decision is Made

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have released Linebacker/Defensive Back Derrick Moncrief and while I believe the right move was made here from General Manager Jeremy O’Day, it doesn’t mean that the move doesn’t suck.

I’ve said that Moncrief is one of the players the team should move on from in free agency (lost his starting SAM LB spot to C.J. Reavis and looked out of place in the defensive secondary) and while I still believe that, the Riders are moving on from a GREAT community guy and a great veteran leader. And for the off the field reasons, that stings. He embodied what it should be to be a Saskatchewan Roughrider.

While Moncrief had some very good years as a player here in Saskatchewan, it was the community work that I believe he will be best remembered for. Countless player appearances for signings at The Rider Store(s), going to schools to talk to and meet kids… he did it all and was EVERYWHERE. When we talk about getting players out in the community more, Moncrief was exactly what we were talking about.

I know people will remember the 2019 Labour Day Classic game for Brett Lauther‘s walk off field goal, but it was Derrick Moncrief having a monster game (including an interception on Winnipeg’s opening drive) that really set the tone for that game. He was a big time player in big time games for years and that shouldn’t be forgotten.

Thank you for everything, both on and off the field, ‘Crief! Best of luck going forward in your playing days (hello Chris Jones and the Edmonton Elks). Maybe we’ll see you back in green and white in a coaching role when the time comes.
