With the news that the BC Lions are about to release superstar linebacker Solomon Elimimian, there is one team that NEEDS to sign him more than the rest. That’s the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
It’s no secret that it’s the defense in Saskatchewan that is going to keep the team in games again in 2019. Much like 2018, the defense is the strength of the team, but there is one glaring hole. Middle Linebacker. Sure, Cameron Judge and Sam Hurl did a pretty decent job there last year, but you didn’t notice them. They didn’t stand out. Sam Eguavoen, who signed with the Miami Dolphins in the offseason, was arguably the Riders best defender last year and his departure is the one that is going to be missed the most. Enter a top 2 LB in the league in Elimimian.
Elimimian would immediately upgrade the LB group that has Judge, Hurl, SAM LB Derrick Moncreif, newcomer Dyshawn Davis and essentially a bunch of special teamers and guys you’ve never heard of before. With the team still looking like they can make a Grey Cup run (which rides on the health of QB Zach Collaros), Elimimian would put them right at the top of the contenders list. Sure, Calgary would be a good fit for him after Alex Singleton signed in Philadelphia, that’s just not the Stampeders style. They don’t go for the flashy free agents, they build from within… trust the process, you know.
Saskatchewan makes the most sense and there is no better way for new GM Jeremy O’Day and Head Coach Craig Dickenson to show that they are serious about winning a Grey Cup than to bring in a future hall of famer to put them over the top. The only question, is which number would Elimimian get? (56 is retired by the franchise – Ray Syrnyk)
