Riders Theme Nights Are More of the Same… Again

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced their Theme Nights for the 2024 season today. And yet again, they are pretty much the exact same as they are every year and I’m left less than impressed.

First, I will give the team credit. They announced them before we recorded our show this week, so I don’t have to wait a week to complain about it! But in all seriousness, I will give the Riders some kudos here. Not a lot… just some.

It’s pretty obvious that when they looked at their list of themes, they needed to “refresh” them a bit. They didn’t ADD any new themes, they just changed the name of a couple. “Country Roots” night is no more. Instead, we get “Prairie Proud” night. From the way they tease this, it’s just Country Roots night. BUT, I do like that they appear to want to highlight local musicians throughout the game that night. AND they’re bringing back the sheep for halftime! So at least we have that.

And goodbye to “Retro Night” (kind of), we now have “Throwback Thursday: Eras (Riders’ Version)”. Okay, I get the whole Taylor Swift vibe. I love me some Tay Tay, so have some fun with the whole Eras thing. But it’s literally the same thing. You have “Legends Night” which is basically a retro night anyways… Go ALL IN with a “Swiftie Night”! You want a new demographic to come to games and buy tickets? GET THE SWIFTIES ON BOARD!

But otherwise, it’s the same old, same old. I get why you have a Family Day, Community Culture Night, KISISK├éCIWAN Game. Those are all important and you’ll never hear me say anything bad about those. But “Green is the Colour” as a theme? Ummm… what? Are we all getting tired of wearing our *checks notes* blue or red to games that we now get to wear green? Riders, this is NOT A THEME.

How about a “Superhero Night” theme? Get fans to dress up as their fave superhero. “Cartoon Night”? Let’s have some FUN with this. Are those new ideas? Well, to the Riders they would be, but this is nothing out of the ordinary. But it’s DIFFERENT and would be REALLY easy to execute by the staff.

So, while we get a few “refreshed” themes this year, overall, the marketing department of the Saskatchewan Roughriders fails yet again. Get creative and try something new. Dare I say it might actually be… *gasps* FUN?
