Rider Nation lost a legend this past week, as we found out on Wednesday that former President & CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Jim Hopson passed away on Tuesday. Hopson had been battling stage 4 colon cancer since being diagnosed in April of 2021 and just earlier this year decided to stop chemotherapy treatments to focus on his remaining time with us.

I had the chance to chat with Mr. Hopson in January and I hope you can spare the time to give it a listen. He shares some great stories from his playing days with the Riders and of course, running the team for the greatest period this team has ever had.

Rest easy, Jim. Thank you for everything you did for the Roughriders and for being the genuine, great man you were.

FUCK cancer!

But knowing Jim, he’d want us to keep talking about our beloved Riders. So we will do that.

In other Rider news this week, there were a couple of signings of note. First, star Canadian receiver Sam Emilus signed a 1 year extension, keeping him with the club through the 2025 season. He had a breakout year in 2023 and I fully expect him to be a major part of the Riders success in 2024. A great move for General Manager Jeremy O’Day.

Another Offensive Lineman joins the party as Guard/Tackle Sadarius Hutcherson was signed. He’ll be in quite the battle on the O-Line in Training Camp next month as the team looks to shore up what was their weakest link over the last couple of years. I love that O’Day is bringing in a ton of O-Lineman. He didn’t last year and it bit the team. I have no doubt that this year’s O-Line will be much improved and one of the stronger groups on the team.

The CFL Draft goes at the end of the month, with the Riders holding the #3 overall pick (and the 3rd pick in each round) and it’s time to wonder… Should Riders draft by positional need or by best player available? I think with the depth they currently have, best player available is the way to go, but it will be interesting to see what Coach Corey Mace wants this team to look like.

And finally, a special birthday in Rider Nation. Nana Ethel turned 93 on Saturday! Happy belated birthday to one of Riderville’s finest! Nana is as witty as ever and loves her Riders like no other! See you soon, Nana!
