Last week, I started out the week by putting out my list of potential free agents that the Saskatchewan Roughriders MUST re-sign for the 2024 season. This week, I went the other way and posted my list of potential free agents I think the team should walk away from if they want to be competitive next season.
We found out that stud Canadian receiver Sam Emilus and linebacker T.J. Brunson had a workout with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. We obviously wish them luck in making it in the NFL, but selfishly, these are a couple of players we want the Riders to hang onto. Emilus had a monster breakout season in 2023 putting up 1,097 yards and 6 TDs, including a handful of highlight reel catches that cemented him in the upper echelon of not just Canadian receivers, but big play receivers in the CFL. Brunson was a depth player, but made a huge impression on the opening kickoff of his first CFL game, where he had a MONSTER hit on the returner.
A big re-signing for the Riders this week as defensive back Amari Henderson will be back for 2024. The team needs help in the secondary, so with a healthy Rolan Milligan back as well, things are starting to look up in the defensive backfield. On the D-Line, tackle Miles Brown was re-signed as well. He’s a depth piece that needs to take the next step to become an every down player, but he has shown some promise over the last few seasons.
General Manager Jeremy O’Day continued signing new talent this past week, signing running back Jerrion Ealy (Ole Miss). With both Jamal Morrow and Frankie Hickson both potential free agents, the running back position is a huge question mark, so I think we can expect a few more running backs to be brought in over the next couple of months.
The 2024 CFL schedule came out on Thursday and you can now make your travel plans! The season for the Riders begins Saturday, June 8th in Edmonton and the home opener is Sunday, June 23rd against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Riders regular season concludes with a game at home against the Calgary Stampeders.
