Riderville Roundup – February 25

Another week has passed and that means we are another week closer to the start of the 2024 CFL season! Here’s what happened in Riderville this past week:

General Manager Jeremy O’Day kept adding players to the roster early in the week, signing defensive back Marcus Murphy and Offensive Lineman Jonathan Hubbard

Murphy is a long shot to make the active roster, but there will definitely be Practice Roster spots open for a few defensive backs. He’ll be in a fight with plenty of others to try and get one of the few spots available.

Hubbard, a Left Tackle… a TRUE Left Tackle (!) has as good as a shot as anyone right now to secure a spot on the starting O-Line. O’Day has done a good job this offseason at addressing one of the biggest needs on the team and Hubbard will compete with other Americans Jerald Hawkins and Trevor Reid for the starting Left Tackle spot. The good thing is that if none of these options pan out, the Riders have options and could put Philip Blake (or Logan Ferland) out there at tackle. We FINALLY have the depth and versatility on the O-Line to have more than just a Plan A!

No other signings this week for the team, but former Head Coach Craig Dickenson joined brother Dave Dickenson with the Calgary Stampeders as a consultant to the coaching staff.

This week, I kept reading Rider fans talking about former Rider QB Jake Dolegala signing in B.C. and fans fearing that will come back to haunt the Riders. Did the Riders make the wrong choice by keeping Mason Fine instead of Dolegala? Everyone knows that Rider fans love their backup QBs, so I don’t think this discussion will go away any time soon.

As CFL free agency has slowed down to almost a complete stop, I did my version of the WAY too early Power Rankings… did I get it right? We talked about these Power Rankings (and much more) on the last episode of the show.

And finally, Saskatchewan Roughriders Senior Journalist & Historian Rob Vanstone celebrated 1 year with the team on the 21st! How has his first year gone? Tune into the next episode of The Piffles Podcast when Rob will join us to kick off the show!
