It was a BUSY week for the Riders this past week and it started out with a major announcement, one that we’ve been waiting on for what has seemed like months, the coaching staff was finally named. It’s quite a young group of coaches, but it’s not only filled with Grey Cup Champions, it’s Grey Cup Champions that have won together… recently! This is a major win for the Riders in my mind. We have talked a ton about culture and it’s becoming clearer what this new culture of the team will look like. I’m looking forward to seeing this coaching staff grow and blossom and help the team get back to their winning ways!

Plenty of roster moves made this week as well. A few more pending free agents were re-upped for 2024 with running back Frankie Hickson and Defensive Lineman Charbel Dabire both inked to new deals.

Joining the green and white is receiver Geronimo Allison. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because he spent a few years with the Green Bay Packers in the NFL. He doesn’t come up here with as much upside as Tevin Jones did from his NFL days, but we’ll see what he has in the tank at Training Camp.

Other new recruits signed this past week include linebacker K.D. Davis and defensive end Roman Lee Harrison.

Cut from the roster is receiver Jake Wieneke. He was passed on the depth chart by Jarreth Sterns last year and was due a bonus, so the move made sense. He’s clearly lost a step and for the price, wouldn’t be worth bringing back.

With free agency less than a month away, I’m starting to look at the team’s roster by positional groupings and see where they need the most help. I started out the week by looking at the Quarterbacks and Special Teams and ended the week with the Running Backs and Linebackers. The next month will be interesting in terms of which free agents the Riders will bring back before free agency opens.

Thanks in part to an article done recently by TSN’s Marshall Ferguson, I put together my Top 5 Roughrider Breakout Candidates for the 2024 season. I may update this after free agency and the draft, but I went with 5 players currently on the roster on that day.
