We made it CFL fans!! Training Camps are over, all the preseason games have been played and now it’s Week 1 in the CFL! And for us Rider fans, a busy offseason ends and we can start to see what kind of team Head Coach Corey Mace has in store for us!

While there wasn’t a game for the Riders this past week, it was still a busy one! Here’s what happened in the heart of the CFL… It’s the Riderville Roundup:

The Riders kicked off the week by saying hello to Mosaic Stadium as their home for the last week of Training Camp and help practices until Thursday to try and figure out who was going to make the final roster. Early in the week, Defensive Back Holton Hill and Canadian Linebacker Matt Dean were released.

Then on Thursday evening, a new era in Riderville began! The team officially launched their new alternate ‘Obsidian’ jersey and logo! I have to say, the more I see the logo, the more I love it! I’ve been BEGGING for a brand refresh for a while now and I’m pumped we got it! Judging by how busy The Rider Store was on Friday morning when they opened up the new merch to the public, I’m not alone in liking it. It was PACKED in there!

Of course, the hardest part of Training Camp happened on Saturday… the cuts (unless you are Homer Simpson). A few notable releases include QBs Mason Fine and Antonio Pipkin, WR Brayden Lenius and LB T.J. Brunson

The Practice Roster to start the year has: OL Jacob Brammer, OL Zack Fry, OL Daniel Johnson, RB Frankie Hickson, WR Dohnte Meyers, WR Joe Robustelli, DL Habakkuk Baldonado, DL Caleb Sanders, LB Jordan Herdman-Reed, LB Zakoby McClain, LB Stephen Smith, DB Antoine Brooks Jr., and P Joe Couch.

(There are still about 6 or 7 players the Riders will need to move onto injured lists before the season opener in Edmonton.)

There are a few names in the cut list that I’m a bit disappointed about, but you can’t keep them all. I gave my list of new players I was hoping the Riders would keep around and 5 of my 6 made the team. I’d say that’s a pretty good batting average!

And I have to give kudos to General Manager Jeremy O’Day for the talent brought in this year. This really looks like a big upgrade in talent than what he had the last few years. The team looks good on paper! But we just need it to translate into wins on the field itself.

What’s next for the Riders? Well, it counts for real now! The Riders start getting ready for their regular season opener in Edmonton this week with practices at Mosaic Stadium. The game against the Elks will be on Saturday, June 8th at 5pm.
