It was a BUSY week in Rider Nation as we had the CFL’s Global and Canadian Drafts on Tuesday! Let’s recap those and more in this week’s Riderville Roundup.

On Monday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders added some Canadian talent to their defensive backfield before the Draft by signing former U of S Huskies star Katley Joseph. He has quite the resume and should be able to challenge for a roster spot on special teams with the other Canadian DBs on the roster behind Nelson Lokombo and Jayden Dalke

I didn’t mention Jaxon Ford because General Manager Jeremy O’Day mentioned on Monday when speaking to media that Ford underwent wrist surgery and will miss part of the season. A blow to the Riders depth for sure. O’Day also mentioned that American Offensive Tackle Brandon Council likely wouldn’t be back with the team as he has an opportunity at Auburn University. The Ford injury creates a few questions… and opportunities in the Riders defensive secondary.

Now, onto Tuesday morning’s CFL Global Draft.

Riveting stuff again this year as 7 punters and kickers were selected out of the 18 picks. As for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, they selected DL Tyrone Taleni from USC (Western Samoa) in the first round and Jordy Sandy, one of those punters (Australia), in the second round, 12th overall. Taleni will compete with Habakkuk Baldonado for a spot on the D-Line and Sandy will be in tough up against last year’s sensation Adam Korsak for a Global spot on the roster.

The team also announced the signing of D-Lineman Sidney Houston Jr. on Tuesday between the Global and the Canadian Drafts and signed Canadian O-Lineman Ryan Berta, American O-Lineman D’mitri Emmanuel and American Defensive Back Eric Smith on Friday.

But the main focus this week was on the CFL Canadian Draft. The Riders had the 3rd pick in each round for this draft. Here’s how the picks went:

Round 1 (3rd overall) – OL Kyle Hergel (Boston College) (Signed a free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints)

Round 2 (12th overall) – LB Nick Wiebe (U of S)

Round 3 (23rd overall) – WR Dhel Duncan-Busby (Bemidji State)

Round 4 (32nd overall) – LB Melique Straker (Arkansas State)

Round 5 (41st overall) – OL Daniel Johnson (Purdue)

Round 6 (50th overall) – WR D’Sean Mimbs (Regina)

Round 7 (59th overall) – WR Ajou Ajou (South Florida)

Round 8 (68th overall) – DB Richard Aduboffour (Western)

How did the Riders grade out? We gave our post Draft thoughts on what General Manager Jeremy O’Day and Head Coach Corey Mace are bringing to Riderville from the 2024 Draft.

And when I look back at the 2024 Roughriders draft class, a few things became crystal clear to me: the team likes their current Canadian content and we can safely welcome back the Canadian Air Force.

Speaking of Drafts, last week I gave my Top 5 Draft Picks the Riders have made under GM O’Day (and he’s had some REALLY good picks), but in the name of fun and since we all know the CFL Draft is a bit of a crapshoot, you have to take some bad with the good. Here’s my Top 5 Swing and a Miss Draft Picks the Riders have made under GM O’Day. Hopefully the top picks made this year pan out.

Now, onto this year’s Canadian Football Hall of Fame class. WOW what a list of greats, including some Rider legends! Receivers Weston Dressler and Chad Owens, Defensive Lineman/Linebacker Vince Goldsmith and Head Coach Ray Jauch are the former Riders getting the call to the hall. They are joined by other greats S.J. Green, Marvin Coleman, Ed Laverty (builder) and media greats Farhan Lalji of TSN and Steve Daniel (CFL Stats Guru and Associate VP of Football Analytics for the CFL). Congratulations to all of this year’s inductees!

For our friends up in Saskatoon, are you ready for some football??? Rookie Camp opens THIS WEDNESDAY!! You’ll get the first look at some of the new players to wear the green and white and make their impressions on the new coaching staff to see who gets invited to main camp next week!

And finally, congratulations to Mike Bekker (on Facebook) for winning our A.J. Ouellette signed football that was drawn live during The Piffles Podcast this week! Enjoy your great piece of Rider memorabilia!!
