Roughriders Free Agents: DaMarcus Fields

Published: Monday, Jan 5th 2026, 6:01am

Every day until the Ed Hervey Tampering Window (or as others call it, the CFL Free Agent Negotiation Window) opens, I’m going to have a look at one potential free agent from the Saskatchewan Roughriders and look at their chances of re-signing with the Grey Cup Champions.

Today, a member of the defensive secondary, Halfback DaMarcus Fields.

When I think of Defensive Backs, I think back to the early 2000s Roughriders teams and the continuity we saw with their secondary. Guys like LaDouphyous McCalla, Eddie Davis, Omarr Morgan and Davin Bush, who were together for years before they really started to gel and become a good secondary. Keeping the same guys around who know each other and understand communication is key to the success of a defensive backfield.

I think the same can and will be said about this group of defensive backs that we have here with our Grey Cup Champions. Rolan Milligan, Marcus Sayles, Jaxon Ford are all pencilled in currently as starters, guys who have been here for a few years now. We’ll talk about Tevaughn Campbell in due time, but today, we look at halfback DaMarcus Fields.

Like the teams we saw 20+ years ago, Fields has been around for a few seasons now, playing in every game for the green and white over the last 2 seasons. Fairly or unfairly, Fields has taken a brunt of the heat from Rider fans when talking about the secondary and some of the big plays given up. When you have guys like Campbell, Milligan and Sayles, I guess someone has to be the group’s weak link. I don’t think that’s the case with Fields, as I think he has shown a lot of improvement, especially in the second half of the 2025 season.

But will that translate to a new contract for the pending free agent?

Fields was likely making the league minimum the last few seasons and is due a modest raise. But I don’t think he cashes in with Saskatchewan. And it’s not because of a lack of talent, I think he’s a solid DB that will be an asset to any team. No, I think it’s due to the talent behind him and the salary management system.

With Sheldrick Redwine and Benny Sapp III waiting in the wings, both with some very meaningful experience in 2025, the decision to move on from Fields might have already been made. Both Redwine and Sapp III will be on a rookie contract for 2026 and it doesn’t make a lot of sense for General Manager Jeremy O’Day to give more money to Fields when he has proven guys ready for a step up.

I like Fields and I think he’ll have himself a solid CFL career, but I’d be shocked if he is back in green and white in 2026. I think Fields is off to another team this upcoming season, but I’m super glad he was able to help us win the Grey Cup in 2025!
