Roughriders Keeping Key Starters Home in Preseason Finale

Tomorrow, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have their preseason finale in Edmonton against the Elks and some key starters aren’t making the trek at all… and that’s not a bad thing. No, that’s a good thing!

First, I’m a tad surprised we won’t see a series or two out of starting QB Trevor Harris (even though he IS travelling with the team), but they must feel that he has the playbook down pretty well and liked what they saw from him against Winnipeg on Monday. It’s not like his job was in jeopardy, I just thought we’d see a bit of him, that’s all. Also not joining Harris in Edmonton are receivers Shawn Bane Jr. and Kian Schaffer-Baker and running back A.J. Ouellette. None of those should be surprises as they are the 3 main offensive weapons and there’s no need to risk anything with them out there.

And with the offensive line remaining the same as Monday’s game, it’s pretty safe to assume that Trevor Reid has won the job and will be the starting left tackle to begin the year.

On defense, I’m not surprised we won’t see D-Lineman Micah Johnson, Anthony Lanier II and Malik Carney. Their roster spots are pretty safe, same with starting middle linebacker Jameer Thurman, who also will not play. We’ll get an extended look at the defensive ends who are battling it out for a spot on the roster and more of linebackers Diego Fagot and Zakoby McClain who both looked good on Monday.

But there still are plenty of questions in the secondary that need to answered tomorrow. DBs Rolan Milligan Jr. and Amari Henderson will not suit up and it’s a bit concerning because the other DBs in camp have looked good and it was a wide open competition back there. I’d assume that Henderson’s spot is fairly safe, but you can’t make the club in the tub. If the others perform well again, there might be a REALLY tough decision or two in the defensive backfield for Head Coach Corey Mace.

I’m looking forward to seeing the battles on defense again tomorrow and seeing how that DB room will look when all is said and done.

It should be a nice afternoon at Mosaic Stadium for the Rider Rally and streaming of the game and I can’t wait to head out there to cheer on our green and white! If you happen to go there as well, come say hi! GO RIDERS!
