1 – Calgary (6-0)
2 – Edmonton (4-2)
3 – Winnipeg (4-3)
4 – Saskatchewan (3-3)
5 – Ottawa (4-2)
6 – BC (2-3)
7 – Hamilton (2-4)
8 – Toronto (1-5)
9 – Montreal (1-5)
Things are starting to become clearer in the CFL as teams finish up their first 1/3 of the season. Unlike recent weeks in the CFL, the week 7 power rankings saw next to no movement. In fact, only Hamilton dropped down a spot after their performance over the last 3 games.
Calgary is still the undisputed #1 team in the CFL right now, though they had more difficulty than a team should after starting with a 24-0 first quarter lead against the Roughriders. The Riders outscored and out-moved the ball over the final 3 quarters and made it interesting, but Calgary still walked out of Mosaic Stadium with a 6-0 record.
Edmonton’s modus operandi has been to survive the 1st quarter and outscore their opponents over the remaining three, and that did not change on Thursday night in Montreal. The Eskimos fell behind 10-3 before turning on the jets and leaving the Vernon Adams led Montreal Alouettes in the dust. Edmonton and Winnipeg are battling for the #2 spot in my power rankings right now, and Winnipeg is getting closer.
Ottawa doesn’t get bumped down solely because they managed to somehow win a game in the CFL without scoring a single touchdown. REDBLACKS kicker Lewis Ward finished the game 1 back of the CFL record with 7 field goals on route to a 21-15 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. I can’t, in good conscience, move a team up the rankings when they don’t manage to score a touchdown, win or lose.
At this point, what else do you want me to say about Toronto or Montreal? Both sitting at 1-5 and well on their way to guaranteeing yet another Western Crossover. News from Toronto that the QB with two first names (James Franklin) will ride the pine in place of the QB with 3 last names (McLeod Bethel-Thompson) next week against Ottawa. They need a spark if they want to contend in the East.
